The most famous Japanese collective improvisation group is Taj-Mahal Travelers, which was active in 1970¡¯s. The members were seven persons including famous contemporary music composer Kosugi Takehisa, and non-musician members, PA operator, etc. They had no leaders and their plying style was very flexible. Also the music was. Once players were only two. The other time they divided two groups and played at other places at a time. Traveling around the world, they played on TV and radio, rock concerts, jazz clubs, contemporary music festivals, on the beach at dawn, wedding party of a pop star¡¦.
They had only one rule of improvisation - do what you want. If it would be done, it may be too noisy music, we think. But their music is very fantastic and it¡¯s a miracle. How psychedelic it is! What good trip music!
While they were playing, members came in and out as they like. Very freely they did. They said there was a member slept on stage drinking beer (that member might be Kosugi). Nobody knew when the music had started, and while nobody knew the music was over.
The group was formed in 1969. And the members together went on a hippie trip by bus to Europe, Turkey and India (to the Taj-Mahal Temple). Returned to Japan, they hold a celebration concert on July of 1972 at Sogetsu Kaikan, the academic hall that was the most avant-garde in Japan at that time. This album was recorded at that concert.
When you listen to this, you will find yourself drifting with good vibrations in your dream. Oriental feelings will come, too.
